In their report via "the Harry Winston conference call", they announced sales of $67 million during that quarter, an increase of 37% over last years 2nd quarter. Even the U.S., fighting an economic slow down recorded sales of $20 million over the comparable quarter last year which is an increase of 31%. Asian sales were $22.5 million, a 40% increase above the prior year. Consolidated sales increased over 60% resulting in a $28.9 in earnings compared to a loss from operations of $3.9 million over the comparable quarter. The Harry Winston brand increased to $66.9 from $48.8 million comparably.

An offshore oil rig has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, west of the site of the April blast that caused the massive oil spill.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel says the blast was reported by a commercial helicopter company about 9:30 a.m. CDT Thursday. Seven helicopters, two airplanes and four boats are en route to the site, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast.
Ranel says it hasn’t been determined whether the structure is a production platform or a drilling rig or whether workers were aboard. Ranel says smoke was reported but it is unclear whether the rig is still burning

CNBC has been reporting that 2 Hostages are being held in a Washington DC building. It seemed that the CNBC hosts had little information about who, what and why. But this is being reported on several wire services. It had little effect on todays trading as markets continued their strong short covering run continuing to remain up more than 200 in the Dow.

Police reported that a gunman in the Discovery Channel building strong armed 2 hostages and had cyclinders starpped to their backs. 1000 people were evacuated out the back door. This was reported by the local police and confirmed on CNBC.

Starting in 1954 they named Carol and Hazel and thru the 50's there was Audrey and in the 1960's you had Carla, Hattie, Flora and Edna. In the 70's there were Carmen, Fifi and Anita. In the 1980's they started using both men and women's names to describe Hurricanes so there was Fredrick and Allen, Gloria and Gilbert. Then the real trouble started as we rolled into the 90's with Diana, Klaus, Bob and Andrew. Dont forget Luis, Marilyn, Opal, Roxanne and Cesar.

My personal favorite name is Hortense, but you also had Mitch, Floyd and Lenny to round out the end of the millenium. 2000 started with Kieth, Allison, Iris and Michelle, while Lili, Fabian and Isabel were the early names for the new century. But the only hurricane that has ever mattered was on the horizon as we rolled through Juan, Charley,Frances and Ivan, because Jeanne and Dennis were mere step children to Katrina, which made us forget about Stan, Wilma,Dean, Felix, Noel and Gustav, Ike and Paloma.

I love expiration days because most now over look the August monthly CBOE expiration...which is today. It usually has an inter day whipsaw somewhere in it where it looks like hell and then rallies, or the inverse, which is sell off then abruptly rally like its gonna get even on the day - and then tanks. It is Friday, and there is not much to report. Lots of red appears on my watch list and and a sigh of frustration escapes my mouth. Yesterday it was reported that the unemployment rate continues to remain at 9.5% with figures showing less improvement now than earlier in the year, hinting at a slowed recovery. It would seem that each day a new figure is released that swings the market wildly one way or another, making investment decisions very difficult.

Yesterday at the market close, NetEase, China’s third largest online game service provider posted earnings. NTES reported an increase of 4% in net income, jumping from 468.1 million rmb to 485 million rmb. This translates into an earnings per share of $.55 compared to $.53 from a year earlier, analysts were expecting a $.58 increase in earnings per share. Revenue also increased to 1.3 billion RMB from 872.1 million RMB. Although the company’s earnings missed earnings slightly, the overall takeaway for the company has been positive. Currently, NTES is trading at $39.49 up $2.99 or 8% for the day on a volume of 450k.

But on this Friday stocks fluctuated in early trading Friday after the latest consumer spending readings disappointed investors. The Commerce Department said that retail sales rose 0.4 percent in July. That was an improvement after two months of sales declines. But the number was just below economists' forecast of a gain of 0.5 percent. The report did show strength in auto sales, but it also showed that consumers are shying away from other purchases.
The report came out shortly after retailer JCPenney Co. lowered its earnings forecast for the year, citing expectations that consumer spending will be slow. On Thursday, competitor Kohl's Corp. lowered its earnings outlook.

What matters is how they guide revenue for upcoming quarters (and they never give guidance for more than 1 quarter out) and currently the market should care more about listening what they say about sales then they should about the stock price. So I suggest you go and listen to the replay of the call..this will help you have an acute understanding of the stock market during these volatile times.

Today there was a 12% move in Volatility (it went up 12%) and I would say many funds are long volatility today as a trade to help the performance of the fund, and the VIX acts as great downside insurance so they are happy.

Volatility however can blow up in your face if played from the short side. Most short volatility players are the market makers at the CBOE who take the other side of these Vol Trades, and on a day like today they are adding to the selloff by selling S&P Futures to hedge their positions in short Vol.

This is a bit much for many to grasp, but its pretty simple in concept when u think of it like insurance for your car.

Global Markets are pulling back today and have lost about 2% at mid day. I expect the market to give back nearly half of it’s 10% rally over the next few trading days, but not without bargain hunters showing up soon. I think Friday and Monday are the key days for this summer trade and I see Volatility trades remaining on thru Labor Day in most cases, this is the protection many portfolio managers have so they can avoid a big downdraft. Also understand that many Indexes are flat on the year and investors in many funds will start asking questions about what kind of downside protection they have for the portfolio…and many will say they have a VIX Clone..
